Ever wonder who writes MRW Systems’ marketing content? Or who draws our illustrations?
Well, you are in luck. In this week’s Meet the Team installment, we’re answering all those questions. And more!
So, without further ado, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what it is like to work as a marketer at MRW Systems. Enjoy!
Katlyn, Marketing Director
Who are you and what is your job title at MRW?
Hiya! My name is Katlyn, and I work as MRW Systems’ Marketing Director.
How long have you’ve been with the company?
It’s been 3 years. I started back in September of 2017. Time flies!
What does a typical workday look like for you?
I start my day bright and early at 6:30 am and it typically follows this kind of schedule:
6:30 – 7:00 am: Read through emails and plan out day.
7:00 – 7:30 am: Read industry news with a cup of coffee. Reading the news helps me get ideas for our blog posts.
7:30 – 8:30 am: Website maintenance time. I make sure everything is running smoothly.
8:30 – noon: Writing block. This is where I write our marketing content. If I’m not writing, I use this time to edit or plan out marketing strategies.
Noon – 12:30 pm: Lunch break.
12:30 – 3:00 pm: Creative block/writing block. Depending on what I’m working on, this is either when I’m designing our marketing materials, like social media illustration, or working on copy.
What do you enjoy most about working in the technology industry?
There is never a dull moment in the tech industry, especially in the cybersecurity space.
As a tech marketer, I enjoy taking complex ideas/solutions and make them accessible for the everyday person. And it’s especially rewarding when we get a new lead through the website. It makes my week!
What is your favorite piece of tech and why?
While it isn’t not high-tech, my favorite piece, right now, is my Farm Stand by Lettuce Grow.
It’s a smart hydroponic system that allows me to grow herbs, vegetables, and fruit indoors. I LOVE it! Living in the Rocky Mountains, our window to grow plants outside is very small because of the cold temperatures. But the Farm Stand is a great solution for having fresh food year-round.
Plus, it looks SO cool.
What’s a common end-user problem you see a lot of? And how do you fix it?
I’m not savvy enough to help our end-users.
But I have certain experienced my fair share of tech problems. Before MRW, I had difficulty creating strong passwords and remembering them. I used to be the queen of getting locked out of my own applications. And I also reused passwords like nobody’s business.
But that all changed when I got a password manager. Now, I have super strong passwords across my devices and applications. Take that, cybercriminals!
What’s your most-used productivity hack?
Timers. I know, timers are not glamorous. But boy, do they help me focus. I like using the pomodoro technique. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Pick a task
Step 2: Set a 25-minute timer
Step 3: Work on task until the time is up
Step 4: Take a 5-minute break
Step: Repeat step 2-4.
For every 4 Pomodoro, take a longer 15 to 30-minute break.
Now, it’s time for the fun questions! What is your favorite activity to do on the weekends?
One thing I do every weekend is go on a nice, long hike with my husband. It’s always very refreshing and not to mention, a great workout. And the best part about hiking is eating a delicious meal afterwards.
What’s your favorite place you’ve ever visited?
The great state of Colorado. There is endless beauty here!
Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?
I’m really good at making pierogis! And I’m also decent at riding horses.
What are your favorite and least favorite foods?
Oh, that’s a tough one for me. But if a restaurant serves it, I will almost always get duck. If done well, it is so stinkin’ tasty.
My least favorite food? That would probably be hard-boiled eggs. The smell really gets to me.
What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?
My husband’s survival backpack (it’s chalked full of useful things, like bear spray & portable radio), hiking boots, and a sharp knife.
